To see Capri island through the eyes of two-Michelin-starred chef Gennaro Esposito is to immerse in its authentic soul. From historic beach clubs to winding trails, Gennaro shares a personal guide to the island shaped by friendships, tradition, and local insight.
Born in Vico Equense, just across the bay, Gennaro Esposito founded his two-Michelin-starred restaurant Torre del Saracino at the age of 21. He has spent decades working on Capri and now oversees three restaurants—Gennaro’s, Bianca Rooftop Carne & Crudo, and La Palma Beach Club—at the newly revived La Palma hotel.
If you need a morning ritual or an afternoon reset, follow Gennaro's lead to Bar Alberto, his favorite coffee spot in Capri town. No need to order anything fancy – un caffè at the counter will do.
This spot, inside La Palma hotel, is Gennaro's flagship. The menu draws from deep roots – Campanian ingredients, southern techniques – but dresses them with Riviera chic.
One of Capri’s busiest and most beloved restaurants, Da Paolino is shaded by lemon trees and rooted in family history. Gennaro recalls its beginnings as a humble bocce court, now transformed into a dining institution where warmth and sincerity remain intact.
Take the funicular from Marina Grande to Piazza Umberto I. “It’s a thermometer,” says Gennaro. “You go from top to bottom and the atmosphere changes with it. It tells you everything.”
Walk the Sentiero dei Fortini Borbonici, a rugged trail linking Punta Carena to the Blue Grotto. “A beautiful walk,” he says, capturing the island’s wild side.
Honest plates and breathtaking moonrise views near the Arco Naturale. “A kind of outpost resisting the mass tourism,” says Gennaro.
“Not a secret, but still essential,” says Gennaro. Known for warm, freshly pressed waffle cones and a deep sense of ritual and local connection.
Once frequented by Emperor Tiberius, this beach is flanked by ancient ruins and run by a historic Caprese family. Gennaro recommends taking the scenic footpath and watching for restored sections thanks to a beloved local priest.
Located on Marina Piccola, Gioia is Gennaro’s barefoot beach club. “What would a Caprese friend serve you by the sea? Pasta, vegetables, good fish.”
Take in the view from Belvedere di Punta Cannone—“You breathe in the origins of Capri here,” says Gennaro.
The dramatic zigzagging path reopened after decades. “Still one of the most beautiful things to do,” Gennaro notes.
Visit the Hermitage of Santa Maria of Cetrella on Monte Solaro. “One of the most beautiful places in the world for the view, the energy, the authenticity.”
An olfactory homage to the unspoiled beauty of Capri’s natural landscape, Arancia di Capri La Riserva is an intense and multi-nuanced fragrance from a two-month maceration process, evoking the succulent sensation of a freshly hand-peeled ripe orange on a breezy morning with hints of wild rosemary.
